COMMENT YOUR THOUGHTS DOWN BELOW: SMASH OR PASS... GAYNOR MINDENS??
Our personal opinion is that if you are a student, then we would advise that you stick to your regular (non-plastic) shanked pointe shoes in order to develop the required strength and technique for pointework - without the extra support provided by an otherwise, pre-arched, plastic shank, and cushioned platforms.
Once a student builds up the necessary strength and technique, and feels confident dancing in their regular pointe shoes, and are looking for extra support or convenience in order to enhance their performance perhaps for an upcoming competition or show, then they can consider seeking out a professional pointe shoe fitter to advise them on which pre-arched shoe they can try.
However, switching over to a Gaynor Minden pointe shoe or any plastic shank pointe shoe, requires an adjustment period. A different strength and approach is required when it comes to learning how to roll-down effectively from a pre-arched shoe, and therefore, will drastically impact the way you train and dance.
For professionals, these shoes can be life-changing, not only do they have much longer life-span, and therefore require a lot less preparation and sewing, but they also provide a lot more comfort and support to the dancer, creating a more liberating experience when on stage. Gaynor Minden and other modern pointe shoe designs are also designed to be a lot quieter when landing from jumps.
That being said, many professional ballet companies have their own style and preferences over which pointe shoes would best suit and fit their dancers. This can be due to both aesthetic and technical reasons, that certain companies would prefer their dancers only working with one or two brands over any other.
Overall, we would still emphasise that any ballet student sticks to the classic, "wood" (paper and paste) shank shoes, for the best results in their development and training. Similar to learning to drive a manual car before switching over to an automatic, we feel the same effect takes place when a student trains traditionally first before switching over to Gaynors.
