Elizabeth II's chandelier earrings. The Queen's personal collection included many gorgeous earrings. But the earrings that her parents gave her as a wedding present are particularly notable. They are notable for the fact that the diamonds in them are cut in various forms of cutting that were popular at the time. They were created by Cartier in 1929 for Margaret Greville, a friend of Elizabeth's grandmother. This lady bequeathed her collection to Elizabeth's mother. She died in 1942. Five years later, Elizabeth married and her mother gave the chandelier earrings to her. At the wedding, the princess wore other earrings, diamond and pearl earrings received from her grandmother. In order to wear all these gifts, she had to have her ears pierced. And a wave of imitation swept across the country: those women who did not have their ears pierced, when they learnt that the Crown Princess had done so, were eager to do the same.
